Sacred Circle
august 2024, Island Connect residency in Saaremaa
wildflowers, juniper, steelwire, steel chain
In ancient animistic culture, circles were often used as protective symbols. It was believed that drawing a circle around something would protect it from negative energy and harmful spirits. This is why the ancient Norse people often conducted rituals within stone circles, which were considered sacred places.
During my residency in Saaremaa, I gathered wildflowers and herbs from the coastal meadows and pastures and wove them around a wire to create an installation-like wreath. Following folk tradition,
I intertwined 9 different plant species into the wreath.
